Manawatū
Get the blood pumping
There are plenty of trails to explore in Manawatū. The Rangiwahia Hut Track is a great day tramp for families and newer trampers, featuring a stunning arched wooden bridge and a cozy overnight hut experience.
Cyclists have plenty of options too, with Arapuke Mountain Bike Park, the lower North Island’s premiere mountain biking destination offering 30km of trails all year round. He Ara Kotahi is a shared cycling and walking track imbued with history, fascinating architecture and beautiful wildlife.

Local art, history and heritage
In this creative hub art and culture reign supreme. Wind your way along the Coastal Arts Trail and stop in at the Zimmerman Art Gallery, then browse the exhibitions at Te Manawa Museum. Get hands on with an art class run by artist and teacher Joe McMenamin and browse the largest collection of John Deere tractors in NZ at The Coach House Museum.
Beyond the urban centres is the 1.5 million-year-old Te Āpiti – Manawatū Gorge, a national taonga (treasure) that divides the Tararua and Ruahine ranges. Discover myths and legends on a walk through a world where mighty moa once roamed.

Take a heritage river cruise along Te Awa Tupua/Whanganui River, the first river in the world to be bestowed legal personhood status and take a tour of the Durie Hill tunnel and elevator, New Zealand’s oldest operating public lift.
